In a list released this year by Forbes Magazine, Michael Dell is named as the richest person in Austin, with a net worth of $18.7 billion. Rich folk from other Texas cities: Alice Walton (Dallas), Richard Kinfder (Houston) and Charles Butt (San Antonio).

Dell got his start by selling PC parts out of his college dorm at the University of Texas, then parlayed that business strategy into what is now the Round Rock-based Dell Inc. The company is one of the world’s leading computer sellers behind Lenovo and HP. It also boasted an impossible-to-ignore marketing campaign in the early aughts.

Dell’s direct-to-consumer model revolutionized the computer industry, and while some have made fun of the tech giant for only selling basic models, there’s a good chance you’re reading this article on a Dell desktop (especially if you’re at work). Dell Inc. also bought data storage company EMC Corp. for $67 billion last October, signaling a growth for the company to become more than just a computer manufacturer. The company also went private in 2013 after Dell led a $25 billion buyout, ending a 25-year stretch of being a publicly traded company.
